It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Pararescueman Curtis W. Phythian (AKA Snake) on Nov 17, 2020. Curt joined the Air Force in 1965. After basic he entered Pararescue training in PJ class 66-1 graduating in Oct 65. Subsequently, off to Jungle Survival School in the Philippines with a follow-on assignment to Tachikawa AFB, Japan (1966-1969); Da Nang, RVN (1969-1970); Hamilton AFB CA; Eglin AFB, FL (1970-71); RAF Woodbridge, UK (1971-1974); NCOIC/Korat RTAB, Thailand
(1975-1976); Commander OLJ, Lackland AFB TX (1976-1978); NCOIC/RAF Woodbridge, UK (1978-1980). Curt applied for and was accepted into the Air Force Physician Assistant PA school Phase 1 & 2 (1980-1982) after graduation. He was assigned as a Primary Care PA at McConnell AFB, KS (1982-1990). After retiring from the Air Force, Curt went to work as a Cardiology PA at Cardiovascular Consultants of Kansas (1990-1996). Then off to Austin, TX working at Austin Heart as a cardiology PA in Austin TX
(1996-2008). Then retiring to Wimberley, TX.
Curt flew over100 combat missions and participated in several lifesaving missions during his years as a PJ. He received numerous awards and decorations to include two Distinguished Flying Crosses for heroism, the Airman’s Medal, Eight Air Medals and numerous other medals and decorations.
Curt is survived by his wife Clancy, sons Brian D and William C. Phythian.
Clancy stated that Curt was always prouder of being a Pararescueman than anything else he had ever done in his life. Curt was an outstanding PJ and leader and he will be missed by those of us that knew him living by the motto, “These things we do so others may live”.

Some of us did not know Curt or just met him in passing with a hand shake. Those that worked with and knew him hold him in high regard as a warrior PJ, who now joins the squadron of PJ Rescue Angels who have made their final jump.
When one of our PJ brothers passes he takes a piece of our hearts with him. It would be immensely appreciated if those who have stories would call Clancy with your remembrances:
