PJ Rodeo Dates
October 24th - 29th, 2021
Some of the guys who made it to TJ Bruce Service this week.
A note for Pete Harding
I was an ART PJ in the 302nd ARRS at Luke AFB, AZ. My NCOIC was MSgt Raleigh D. Curtis, one of the first ten WWII Army Paratroopers to become PJs.
We had a PT run every noon for 45-60 minutes around the Base. Each day our run took us past the Base Hospital. The first part of the hospital was the Flight Surgeon's Office. As we passed we saw the same enlisted guy in whites sitting on the steps with a sack lunch and he just stared at us for five minutes every day.
After watching us for about five weeks, he jumped up one day and streaked out to the road and stopped us. He had black hair, appeared to be about 5' 10", and 175. He said,"WHO are you guys?? You run past here every day! R.D. told him we were PJs from the Air Rescue Unit down the street. TJ said, "Man, I wish I could get into that outfit but it would never happen." When we asked why, he said because he was in TAC and they would
turn him down. R.D. told him we would test him on the run and the swim at the Base Pool. And so we did. He was not far off from the minimums, so R.D. called Walther at HQS and told him we have a great acquisition ready for the pipeline if you can get him out of TAC.
It took about six weeks for that to happen. TJ was ecstatic over the opportunity to
become a PJ. He not only passed everything but was superior. One day, this lean, mean young PJ showed up in our office. He kept saying it all started when he wondered about these two guys who ran past him every day.
About three years later R.D. and I were at Eglin for something to do with Doc Buckley's area, I think it was Advanced Medical Course. Late one afternoon, we were sitting on the steps of the BAQ having a brewski. All of a sudden this Air Force bus came across the parking lot and we could see that there were about 20 PJs on the bus. The first one off was TJ and he sprinted over to us and we had a great reunion.
