It is with the utmost respect and honor we announce the passing of our teammate, warrior and Brother, Edward (Ed) Askew Caines. Ed was born August 23, 1960 to George and Ramonia Caines. He was a loyal son, husband, father, brother and friend. He grew up in South Florida, raised in a Christian
household. He married JoEllen in 1989, and they raised two sons together. They lived in the Kendall area and later moved to St. Augustine.
He had a full life, played sports in his childhood, fished, dove and swam in any body of water that he could find. He was an adventurer at heart, and loved nature. He had a lifelong thirst for learning. He was proud to earn his Associates degree in business, taught himself Spanish, and learned to fly airplanes. He proudly served in the
United States Air Force Pararescue and as a motor pool mechanic. He built his own hydraulic business, and then became a hospital maintenance mechanic for 30 years.
Introducing himself or breaking the ice with people in a little Spanish lesson, he never met a stranger. He loved helping people and would often go out of his way to support them. Ed liked a hard day's work, and it brought him great satisfaction. He was always eager to face a challenge and rarely backed down. He was sometimes called MacGyver due
to the fact that he could fix anything, and invent the tools he needed for any task.
Ed always wanted to be prepared for what's to come. He used all of his strength and wit to make it through. He often viewed life as a struggle and never wanted to slow down. Ed passed peacefully on May 12, 2022 doing what he loved. He had a good day working outside on one of the many projects he'd started, and was looking forward to doing more,
but his heart could not keep up with his determination. Everyone whose life he touched will sorely miss him. Ed is survived by his wife of nearly 33 years, JoEllen, sons, Clayton and Charles, brother, George Herbert, sister-in-law, Julie, and his closest friend, Wes Page.
At The time of this posting Ed's memorial arrangements were not complete. We will post an update as soon as they come available.
